Kinesiology Session Structure

What is involved in a Kinesiology Session?

Firstly, Kinesiology does not claim to cure anything. We believe that only the person's body can cure itself. We are the conduit or the facilitator of change to take place in the person's body. Although science requires evidence based proof of efficacy to prove the theory and techniques, absence of this evidence in research does not disprove the safety and efficacy of Kinesiology treatments. Dr George Goodheart DC, (dec'd May 2008) the father of Kinesiology said "The body is simply intricate and intricately simple". If you supply the right measure you will get the right response.

Kinesiology is a therapy involving a client and a practitioner. It is a sacred contract between two people with both working together to achieve a positive outcome. Some practitioners work from offices, clinics and some will operate from their residence in a clinical setting in their home set aside for clinical work. The session can last from 30 minutes to one and a half hours, depending on the client's presenting problems. Follow up visits may be in one, two or three weeks. A few visits are required for more lasting results but it is not necessary to have a long extended treatment program for the same problem. If this happens then the client needs other therapies with or instead of what they are receiving. The fees charged may vary from $60 to over $200, again depending on all factors.

Muscle Testing

The practitioner will use muscle testing / checking / monitoring to evaluate stress levels in the person's nervous and energy systems. With over 100 different training courses from most countries around the world a wide and diverse array of techniques may be employed by a Kinesiology Practitioner. Most Kinesiology Practitioners will be a Member of a Peak Kinesiology Industry Association. With recent changes to teaching, now mainly through Registered Training Organizations there will be a more "standardised approach" to the clinical practice of Kinesiology. As Kinesiology has its background in Chiropractic / Osteopathic and Acupuncture philosophies there is a definite aspect of hands on therapy.

Booking an Appointment

When the client / patient arrives at the clinic after an appointment has been made, prior information may have been provided in brief e.g. a general description of methods to be used, fees to be paid, length of consultation, clothes to be worn, supplements, herbs, therapy oils, equipment that may be useful and will be an extra charge etc. Kinesiology Practitioners usually charge for a complete session, as different to the medical item where a charge is made for each aspect of the treatment with an item number. The client will be advised that no drugs, chiropractic adjustments, x-rays or surgery will be employed. Also, the practitioner may advise that referrals to other professionals may be necessary e.g. Dentists, chiropractors, doctors for blood tests etc., depending on the person's current problems.

History Taken

On arrival, before any therapy is started a thorough history of the person will be taken. The current reason for the appointment is important as this obviously is the reason the person came, however as Kinesiologists we are more interested in the cause of the effect the person is experiencing. All injuries, diseases, visits to hospitals, surgeries, major visits to the doctor, visits to other practitioners, emotional stresses in relation to the issues, relationships at work and at home with family, any abuse that they have suffered, hereditary matters such as disease and health problems of parents, and their general state of well-being during the last few months / years of their lives. Other questions may relate to blood tests, x-rays, scans, supplements that they are taking, and drugs that are prescribed and any substances that they may be using such as illicit drugs. These factors all relate to their present symptoms - which are not as important as the causes, if they genuinely wish to achieve a state of wellness.

The Therapy Session

Most practitioners will use a massage table for most of their therapy, for many reasons. Some therapy will be conducted with the person standing for a short while. At no time will the person be completely naked, however it may be required for the person to remove some of their clothing to to perform certain aspects of the therapy. Although Kinesiology is not massage there are some massage principles used by some Kinesiologists, again depending on their training as mentioned above.

The arms or legs are usually used to perform the muscle testing and muscle response testing. A muscle test is performed to check for the integrity of an individual muscle. Once this has been performed and is treated to bring it into "balance", it is known as an intact, neurologically integrated muscle. This muscle can now be used to test for problems and imbalances in other muscles and the nervous system. This may involve checking for cranial bone blockages, emotional stress on various issues from the past, the present or the future. It can identify factors unknown to the person's conscious thinking, injuries not remembered, allergies to foods and various substances in the environment, phobias etc. Also pain in the body may manifest as a real pain when in fact the cause may be an emotional issue, unresolved. Many injuries such as head injuries have healed but the memory in the nervous system is long forgotten consciously but is still in the computer circuits. Only with muscle testing and muscle response testing will this be revealed where it can be reprogrammed into the nervous system. Along with unresolved head injuries there may be whiplash memory which again can only be tested after the head injury is corrected. When having the session a muscle test is performed then the practitioner will make slight correction to the body or use an affirmation to change the response of the muscle test.

Specific Learning Difficulties

Over the last 25 years many researchers in Kinesiology have noted great improvements in ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, reading, writing and spelling with children of all ages. This is a particular area of interest and most Kinesiologists treat children suffering from these problems. As education is so important, all efforts to clear blockages to learning should be explored by parents and school teachers. If a child is not performing at their optimal level at school Kinesiology may be just what you are looking for. These symptoms have many causes, however unresolved head injuries and emotional issues may be the underlying factors that are not addressed by the authorities who are unaware of these factors. If you don't test you will not know. Nutrition has now been shown to also contribute. Allergy testing can pinpoint the wrong foods and also the better foods to be eating to enhance brain, mind/body function. A Kinesiologist is well trained to support this factor if you are not sure.

After a session of Kinesiology a person may be relaxed, still suffering from inflammation which is felt as residual pain or muscle spasm, extreme tiredness, nauseous if digestive and toxic factors have been stirred up or they may feel elated. Many times children with behavioural problems and learning difficulties may experience dramatic changes and sometimes nothing at all. After a while gradual changes will usually be seen. Sometimes a number of treatments may be necessary, however "the miracle" may occur after only one session. It is recommended to have everything checked to ensure the best results.

Future Visits

As a modality Kinesiology is a way to find out what is happening BEFORE it happens in a serious way. A beneficial way to view the benefit of Kinesiology is to have a 6 monthly visit each year to check out all these stress that occur and are accumulative. It is usually recommended that a good diet regime with a few supplements, depending on a person's lifestyle will assist the person to a state of wellness, and not just freedom from a named disease.
